#11: facebook

The work computer is very slow & faulty on Explorer, but I have registered & have started to work on my site & find friends - especially my colleagues. It seems that it is more secure then My Space, with less ‘needless, useless stuff’. I still perfer this blogging system to communicate - maybe because I’m getting more familiar with it.

The tutorial series from the resource list is wonderful:

How to use Facebook/ExpertVillage Videos

I’ve tried registering onto Facebook several times today - but with no success, so I’ll try again tomorrow. I have however managed to register onto My Space, the network my own kids are on. At home I’ll continue the contact & learn more from them (especially the 2 that have left home).

#10: my space

I’ve looked at several My Space pages from libraries listed in the resources & can see the amazing way that there a ‘buzz’ of communication with the library & it’s users - public / school patrons. There are so many options to choose from - ‘the sky is the limit’. Imagination & time, with dedication is what is needed to make this work. I can imagine that teens would love the opportunity to use this format at school - it’s their language & medium.
Here is a list of headings & ideas gleaned from browsing: (There is more where this came from … )

#8&9: google reader

Well I’ve done it - this machine managed to read the google reader & give me a chance to subscribe to various feeds. :) I looked at activities for kids & various lifestyle interests (health & diet). I can see the advantage of a subscription (when you can find one that is ‘perfect’ through the millions of options) to be informed of current issues in a particular field. The trick is to find exactly what you want, otherwise it becomes overwhelming.

teaching & blogging

I was reading Scan magazine (Vol 27 No 2 May 2008) & became excited with the article on: Happily blogging @ Belmore South by Kim Pericles. Here a school is ‘using blogs as an engaging teaching and learning tool with her students’ (p.4) For anyone interested in reading my site, here is a link to some exciting insights into using this technology in a practical way in a school environment. Excerpts of the magazine can be seen online, & the entries may not be current. If you can get hold of this periodical, it is worth it.

trying Google Reader again

I’ve tried to enter subscriptions to Google Reader again - but to no avail :(  The opening screen still shows an error. On one of the occasions where I ‘refreshed’ I succeeded in getting into the page where you can start finding the subscriptions, then it reverted back to the error page. I think I’ll stop & try at home/tomorrow.

I have learnt how to ’split post with more tag’ for articles that are long & only an excerpt is necessary. Click on the tag in this posting’s toolbar (the one next to inserting an image) where you want to split the text.  :)

#8: using google reader

Week 4: RSS feed aggregator in Google Reader.

I’ve seen the video tutorials, read the information for Google Reader & started the experience of using this. However the opening page of the Reader showed an error. I’ve included the Reader onto my i-google page, & tried again to enter the first page, but it still came up with an error. So I think it’s our system. I’ll try again latter & at home.

#7: my library

I’ve managed to create a link & start to use The Library Thing. The tag/theme is popular fantasy. I love this genre. What a great tool for a teacher librarian/school library.

I’m noticing however that anything to do with transporting an image or anything complicated is difficult on our library system. Other members in the library using the system are finding inconsistancies with what is possible at school & at home. My previous posting displayed a ‘bling bling’ version of my name using an image generator. It actually worked (after several tries). Today as I’m working on this task a message box with ‘instructions’ have taken it’s place. I wonder what will happen next time.

I’m also thinking to change my presentation to a format with 3 or 4 colomns, but I’ll do it at home - it might work better.

more attempts at ‘image generators’

The above sites are great for word puzzle generation for classroom application. I use it alot for kids that have ‘free’ time or have finished early.

I managed to generate an image/text via  http://free.text2logo.com/  :)

‘Font Image Generator’

http://interactimage.com/

I don’t know why- that I created a text/poster in ‘Font Image Generator’ & when copying & pasting it this is what I got. I tried copying & pasting the URL in the box below this one & uploading it, & it wouldn’t. I tried using my own ‘my pictures’ on my C drive & to no avail. So I’ve put the empty box in here with the URL. I wanted this particular image generator as I could see it’s usefullness.
