#16 del.icio.us

Del.icio.us is ‘delicious’ - a great way to organize all the favourites from all my computers (2) & access these. It’s fantastic to network with others & see what they’ve found. However putting it onto my blog in the side page has been a trial - obviously I’m missing some important step - I will ask for assistance from my colleagues.

From Carole Bird’s website I found a great link to explain tags/categories in an Edulogger.

Here is my immediate family: David, Hannah, Paul, Joel, ‘the crew’ together (a few years ago now), my husband & myself. I thought this page needed a picture or two… :)

#14 google book search

I have a ‘book account’ in igoogle, see My Library where I have placed one of my favourite books.

This book search is fantastic for:

  • students wanting a book in their genre - to search at school/home
  • senior school students needing more information on their literature, & connects with other resources/links
  • teachers to see what’s available in their subject areas
  • connecting with the blog’s ‘library thing’

#12,13,15 google stuff

I have been exploring Google this week & in previous weeks. So far I’ve tried & managed:

Google Docs - tried to use ‘powerpoint’/presentation (I’ll need to down load smaller pictures &/or down size them in Picasa)

Google Maps - I found my house & school, & fiddled with the ‘buttons’

Google Calendar & other features on my already existing iGoogle page - e.g. weather, news (top stories), Bible verse of the day, puppy of the day, themes & other ’stuff’ (see the ‘add stuff’ option)

I use Picasa with my photos as a preference, not Flickr

I have a ‘blogger’ blog at http://tulip-marrie.blogspot.com/ called ‘tulip’

#11: facebook

The work computer is very slow & faulty on Explorer, but I have registered & have started to work on my site & find friends - especially my colleagues. It seems that it is more secure then My Space, with less ‘needless, useless stuff’. I still perfer this blogging system to communicate - maybe because I’m getting more familiar with it.

The tutorial series from the resource list is wonderful:

How to use Facebook/ExpertVillage Videos

I’ve tried registering onto Facebook several times today - but with no success, so I’ll try again tomorrow. I have however managed to register onto My Space, the network my own kids are on. At home I’ll continue the contact & learn more from them (especially the 2 that have left home).

I’ve looked at several My Space pages from libraries listed in the resources & can see the amazing way that there a ‘buzz’ of communication with the library & it’s users - public / school patrons. There are so many options to choose from - ‘the sky is the limit’. Imagination & time, with dedication is what is needed to make this work. I can imagine that teens would love the opportunity to use this format at school - it’s their language & medium.
Here is a list of headings & ideas gleaned from browsing: (There is more where this came from … )

#8&9: google reader

Well I’ve done it - this machine managed to read the google reader & give me a chance to subscribe to various feeds. :) I looked at activities for kids & various lifestyle interests (health & diet). I can see the advantage of a subscription (when you can find one that is ‘perfect’ through the millions of options) to be informed of current issues in a particular field. The trick is to find exactly what you want, otherwise it becomes overwhelming.

I was reading Scan magazine (Vol 27 No 2 May 2008) & became excited with the article on: Happily blogging @ Belmore South by Kim Pericles. Here a school is ‘using blogs as an engaging teaching and learning tool with her students’ (p.4) For anyone interested in reading my site, here is a link to some exciting insights into using this technology in a practical way in a school environment. Excerpts of the magazine can be seen online, & the entries may not be current. If you can get hold of this periodical, it is worth it.
